Meet Sparkie Roz

Aug 2026

Why did you become a Sparkie?

I was first invited to a Spark event by a friend from the dog park, and after that I started coming on my own. I’ve always loved community and meeting new people. I’m widowed and don’t have any family in Australia, so I’ve learned you have to be proactive and get out there to stay connected. Spark felt welcoming; everyone had an interesting story to tell, and I wanted to help create that same sense of connection for others.

What brings you joy?

My little Tenterfield Terrier brings me so much joy, as does spending time in my garden and watching the seasons change. I also love catching up with people over coffee, going to the gym, volunteering and challenging myself. Every day I try to find joy in something, even if it’s simply getting up without pain or helping brighten someone else’s day.

Do you have any hobbies?

I love photography, especially capturing moments on my phone rather than worrying about the technical side. I also enjoy travelling, gardening and creating little spaces in my garden using vintage finds and recycled treasures from junk shops and car boot sales. I love anything with history and a story behind it.

Do you have any personal experiences with loneliness?

Yes. I’ve experienced loneliness at different stages of my life, from living and working alone after nursing school to moving to Australia without family. The hardest time was when my husband became unwell with PTSD. You can live in the same house as someone and still feel incredibly lonely and disconnected. After he passed away, I had to rebuild my life, but I’ve learned the importance of staying connected, reaching out to others and accepting support. Now I try to pass that kindness on to people who may be going through similar experiences.

Do you have a favourite book or movie?
