Meet Sparkie Jenny

April 2025

Introducing Jenny, Spark Volunteer.
Sparkies are our constellation of volunteers who support Spark programs and help us to ignite connection. Sharing their stories and perspectives normalises loneliness as a shared human experience.

Why did you join Spark?

I like what Spark represents and the idea of helping others, because as a nurse that’s been my profession all my life. I think I’m a good listener or I hope I am, so I thought I’d like to be part of this (by the way I think we can all improve on listening). I’m retired now, so I can fit it in around the other things I do.

What sparks joy for you?

So many things. Honestly, I am so lucky. I have had such a wonderful life, a really happy upbringing in a big family. I used to work in a neo natal unit, so babies always give me joy – seeing a baby smile. I have my own grandson now, which brings me a lot of joy and I want to be with him as much as possible. Seeing people come out of their shell, I love seeing someone change for the better. I also love freshly mowed lawn and washing on the line – it smells so good. Family brings me joy and being surrounded by positivity.

What are your hobbies?

Music, reading and gardening are my hobbies. I love planting something in the garden and seeing it grow and flower which is why I also volunteer in the garden at The Hut Community Centre.

What’s your favourite movie?

Eat, pray, love.

Thanks Jenny!
