Latest Report: Loneliness Numbers Grow

February 2026

More than half of South Australians report feeling lonely sometimes or often, according to the latest report from Uniting Communities. Among those in their middle years (aged 30–59), the figure rises to 72%. The general proportion of the population feeling lonely ‘often’ has climbed upwards to 14% – its highest level since 2023. The data comes from a survey of the general SA population which has been continuously running since March 2020.

As Nadia Corsini, Senior Research Fellow, explains, “the findings show that loneliness can affect anyone. It is a challenge being experienced across all age groups, with overall numbers rising at a concerning rate. The stats from Uniting Communities show that anyone can experience loneliness – it’s a challenge facing all age groups, with a worrying rise in numbers overall. Unsurprisingly, financial pressures amplify the experience of loneliness; something we can’t ignore given the ever-rising costs of living. If we are going to shift the trend, it’s important to take a whole-of-community prevention response. I love that Spark is inspiring us all to be part of this community effort.”
